One business, many locations, and one very specific trap. Here is how it actually works.
QUICK ANSWER
The trap to avoid
Do not build a page per location from a template. A page that is identical to nineteen others except for the town name is a doorway page, and the penalty applies to the entire domain rather than to the pages that caused it. The test: remove the location name. If the page is no longer useful, it should not exist.
What to do instead
Build a Google Business Profile per location, claimed, correctly categorised, with real photographs of that actual place and reviews collected per location. And keep everything on one domain. Location sub-pages concentrate authority, so that a link earned anywhere lifts every location.
Three branches in Manchester. They are, in Google's eyes, competing with each other.
They cannot all rank in the map pack for “plumber Manchester,” because Google will almost never show two locations of the same business in one local pack.
Not 'plumber Manchester' three times. 'Plumber Didsbury.' 'Plumber Salford.' 'Plumber Stockport.' Each branch owns its actual catchment.
Different photographs, different team, different service emphasis if it is true, different reviews from actual customers of that branch.
Three branches in one city will not produce three map pack listings on the same query. Say it up front, or you will lose the fight in month four.
THE LOCATION PAGE TEST
“Remove the location name from the page. Is it still a useful page about a real place?”
If yes, it is a real page. Build a hundred of them. If no, it is a doorway page. Do not build one.
| Real Location Page | Doorway Page | |
|---|---|---|
| The Team | Named, photographed, actually work there | Stock photo, corporate boilerplate |
| The Work | Real jobs done in that area, photographed | Generic service description |
| The Local Detail | Things actually true of that place | Town name inserted into a sentence |
| The Reviews | From customers of that location | The same five reviews on every page |
| Remove the Town Name | Still useful | Meaningless |
ONE DOMAIN, ALWAYS
brand.com/locations/manchester/ — every link anyone earns, anywhere, lifts every location. One technical stack, one migration, one set of schema.
Separate sites per location: twenty domains, each starting from zero, each needing its own links, its own technical maintenance and its own content, and none of them will ever outrank the local independent who has been there fifteen years.
The only reason multi-location businesses end up with separate sites is history, usually acquisitions that were never consolidated. Consolidating them is a large, genuinely risky migration and it is almost always worth doing. → Website migration
WHERE THE TRAFFIC ACTUALLY IS
Then find the duplicates, because there are always duplicates, and two profiles for one location split the reviews.
A business where half the locations are categorised one way and half another is competing against itself.
The same corporate image on twenty profiles is visibly the same corporate image.
And central visibility, because one location with a 2.8 rating is damaging the brand everywhere.
Via a location group, once you are past ten.
HOW TO TRACK IT
A single rank position is meaningless for a local business. “We rank 3rd” is meaningless without asking “3rd from where.” Position varies enormously by where the searcher is standing.
WHAT WE DELIVER
GBP claim, deduplication, configuration and governance across every location, plus a location page framework that passes the doorway test and the central content layer that lifts every location at once.
Per-location review processes with central visibility, grid-based rank tracking and per-location reporting, so head office and the branch manager both get the number they actually need. Plus an honest conversation about consolidation if the estate is fragmented across separate domains.
FAQ
How do I do local SEO for multiple locations?
Build a Google Business Profile per location, claimed and correctly categorised with real photographs of that actual place. Build a real page per location on one shared domain. And never build those pages from a template, because a page identical to nineteen others except for the town name is a doorway page.
Can two locations of the same business rank in the same map pack?
Almost never. Google will not usually show two locations of one business in the same local pack. Target the neighbourhood rather than the city, so each branch owns its actual catchment, and set that expectation with the client before month four.
Should each location have its own website?
No. One domain with location sub-pages concentrates authority, so a link earned anywhere lifts every location. Separate sites fragment it, each starts from zero, and none will outrank a local independent who has been there fifteen years.
How do I avoid doorway pages on location pages?
Remove the location name from the page. If it is still a useful page about a real place, it is a real page. If it becomes meaningless, it is a doorway page and it puts the whole domain at risk.
How do I track rankings across multiple locations?
Grid-based rank tracking, which shows position across a geographic grid around each location. A single rank position is meaningless for a local business, because 'we rank 3rd' says nothing without '3rd from where.'
What is the most common multi-location SEO mistake?
Building a page per location from a template. It is the fastest way to damage the entire domain, and it is committed constantly by agencies who believe they are doing legitimate work.
Is multi-location SEO the same as franchise SEO?
The technical work is identical. The politics are not. In a franchise, the franchisor owns the brand and the franchisee owns the location, and nobody has agreed who owns the Google Business Profile.
