AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets: What Actually Changed

A featured snippet quoted one page and sent it traffic. An AI Overview synthesises several and sends almost none. That is the whole story.

AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets: What Actually Changed

A featured snippet quoted one page, attributed it clearly, and sent it a click. It was, for a decade, the best real estate in search.

An AI Overview synthesises an answer from several pages, links to them as small citations, and sends almost none of them a click.

That is the whole difference, and it is a substantial downgrade for the publisher.

Winning the featured snippet was a genuine prize: position zero, more traffic, more authority. Being cited in an AI Overview is a much smaller prize: a mention, a small link, and a fraction of the clicks.

But the optimisation is largely the same, which is the useful and slightly surprising part. Clear, direct, structured answers to specific questions win both. The work has not changed. The reward has.

The honest comparison

Featured snippet AI Overview
Sources One Several, synthesised
Attribution Clear, prominent, linked A small citation chip
Traffic Real. Frequently a lot. Very little
Was it worth winning? Enormously Less, and it is not optional
How you win it Clear, direct, structured answer Clear, direct, structured answer
Can you opt out? Yes (nosnippet) Not without leaving Google Search

What actually changed for the publisher

With a featured snippet, Google borrowed your answer and told everyone it was yours.

With an AI Overview, Google reads several pages, writes its own answer, and mentions where it looked.

The user's need is met without visiting anybody.

Around 93% of Google AI Mode sessions end without a click.

And the consequence in your Search Console is the thing that confuses everybody: your ranking has not moved and your clicks have halved.

Position 3. Same as last year. Half the traffic.

This is now one of the most commonly misdiagnosed problems in SEO. Clients believe they have been penalised. They have not. The click was absorbed.Google penalties and how to recover · The SEO metrics that actually matter

Featured snippets are not dead

And people are writing them off too early.

AI Overviews do not appear on every query. Roughly 48% of queries as of early 2026, and the rate varies enormously by category. Automotive keywords trigger them 97% of the time in our data. Some technical and navigational queries almost never do.

On the queries where no AI Overview appears, the featured snippet is exactly as valuable as it always was.

So: keep optimising for it. It still exists. It still pays.

And the same work does both jobs, which means there is no trade-off to agonise over.

How to win both, because it is the same work

Answer the question directly, immediately, in about 40 to 60 words, in a single paragraph, near the top.

Use the question as the heading. What is a featured snippet? is a retrieval hook. Overview is not.

Match the format to the query. A "how to" query wants numbered steps. A "best X" query wants a list. A "X vs Y" query wants a table. Give the machine the shape it is looking for.

Use tables for comparisons. The single highest-extraction format there is.

Be specific. A number, a date, a named mechanism. Not an adjective.

Get it out of the accordion.

And add FAQPage schema, which helps, and which is free. → Do rich snippets help SEO?

The strategic answer

Stop optimising informational content for clicks. It is not coming back.

Optimise informational content for citation and authority, because being named as a source in front of somebody who never clicks still builds the entity, still builds the brand, and still means a language model associates your name with your category. → Topical authority and entity SEO

And move the commercial weight to the queries a generated answer cannot resolve.

Transactional. Local. Real-time. First-party.

A model can explain what a clutch replacement involves. It cannot tell somebody what you charge for one, whether you have the part, or if you can do it on Thursday.

That is the defensible ground, and it is where the money was anyway.

What is the difference between an AI Overview and a featured snippet?

A featured snippet quoted one page, attributed it prominently, and sent it a click. An AI Overview synthesises an answer from several pages, cites them in small chips, and sends almost no clicks.

Are featured snippets dead?

No. AI Overviews appear on roughly 48% of queries and the rate varies enormously by category. On the queries where no AI Overview appears, the featured snippet is exactly as valuable as it always was.

Why did my traffic drop when my rankings did not move?

Almost certainly an AI Overview absorbing the click. Your ranking did not change and your traffic did, and this is now one of the most commonly misdiagnosed problems in SEO. Clients think they have been penalised. They have not.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Not without leaving Google Search. AI Overviews are built from Google's ordinary search index, so blocking `Google-Extended` does not remove you. It is a training control, not a crawler.

How do I win an AI Overview citation?

The same way you won a featured snippet: answer the question directly in 40 to 60 words near the top, use the question as the heading, match the format to the query, use tables for comparisons, and be specific rather than adjectival.

Is being cited in an AI Overview worth anything?

Less than a featured snippet was, and it is not optional. It still builds the brand and the entity association that determines whether a model names you later, even from people who never click.
